Established in 2010, Tonkatsu Aoki has quickly become a culinary landmark, expanding to 11 locations across Tokyo and Yokohama, with its flagship store proudly situated in Kamata.

The Kamata Experience

Visiting the Kamata location is a unique experience. The doors open at 11 AM for lunch service, but eager diners start lining up by 10:30 AM. By the time the restaurant opens, there are usually about 15 people in line. Because the restaurant only has 10 counter seats, only the first 10 people can be seated in the first round. However, the wait isn’t as long as it seems. The staff take your order while you’re in line, so once you’re seated, your meal arrives quickly. Most customers finish their meals within 30 minutes, which helps keep the line moving smoothly.

Exceptional Quality and Must-Try Dishes

What sets Tonkatsu Aoki apart is their unwavering commitment to quality. They use SPF pork (Specific Pathogen Free), which means the pigs are raised in a controlled environment free from specific pathogens. This ensures the highest quality meat, perfect for their signature tonkatsu. Each cutlet is fried in pure lard made from pork back fat, resulting in a crispy and flavorful delight that is second to none.

The standout dish at Tonkatsu Aoki is the “Jo-Rosu Teishoku” (Premium Pork Loin Set). You can choose between the loin (rosu) and fillet (hire) options. The fillet is lean, while the loin offers a richer flavor with its delicious, sweet fat. Each set comes with rice, miso soup, pickles, cabbage, and tonkatsu. On the table, you’ll find three kinds of salt, adding an extra dimension to the already flavorful cutlet. Tonkatsu restaurants typically do not take reservations, and the Kamata main store is no exception. If you want to eat there, you have to line up. This rule applies to all other branches as well. However, the newly opened Ginza branch, which started in October 2023, offers a refreshing change: you can make reservations.

While the Kamata location is cash-only or PayPay, the Ginza branch accepts credit cards, providing added convenience for tourists. The Ginza branch features 8 counter seats, 3 tables for two, and a semi-private room for four, making it ideal for families and groups. English menus are available, ensuring a seamless dining experience for foreign visitors.
